They present the first complete geological map of the Moon

For the first time in its history, the lunar surface has been uniformly mapped. Thanks to this map we will know in depth the 4.5 billion years that our satellite has.

In the summer of 1969, the human being managed to step on the surface of the Moon for the first time. Our closest neighbor in space has hidden countless mysteries over the years, but now we will get to know him better thanks to the first geological map of the Moon.

For the first time, the satellite surface has been uniformly mapped and classified in a paper by scientists at the USGS, in collaboration with ** NASA and LPI. This map will serve as a reference for the next missions to be carried out on the Moon. It also becomes a very important tool for future generations.

The first steps

To make these plans, the scientists used six regional maps created during the first explorations of the Moon along with current information from orbiting satellites.

Thanks to these data, a unified description of the Moon’s rock layers has also been developed. This was helpful in correcting erroneous data regarding moon rock information.

Corey Fortezzo, author of the project, explained that the first geological map of the Moon “provides vital information for new scientific studies by connecting exploration of specific sites.”

One fact to note is that the equatorial region of the Moon comes from stereo observations collected by the Selene mission camera led by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The north and south poles were made by data from the NASA Lunar Orbiter altimeter.

The result of this investigation is this complete plan that we can download. The first geological map of the Moon shows 43 geological units, as explained by the research team at the 51st Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.

In this plane it is possible to appreciate a wide range of colors that represent the geological units of our satellite in the scale of 1: 5,000,000, or, what is the same, 1 millimeter is equivalent to 5 kilometers from reality.
