They recreate a city through the emotions of its inhabitants

New technologies have become a very valuable tool in many entities. It can even be used as an aid to sustainable urban planning, as in this case, the so-called digital twins are used to improve the population’s environment.

The concept of digital twins or digital twins has been around since 2002 and has always been related to the Internet of Things (IoT). Both words have become a very profitable and important technology for many companies, thus becoming one of the main technological trends of the moment.

Digital twins technologies have taken a step forward. This time, a research group from the University of Stuttgart High Performance Computing Center (HLRS) together with the Fraunhofer Institute have created a digital twin with the aim of improving sustainable urbanization in the city of Herrenberg (Germany), which has with more than 30,000 inhabitants.

Much more than a place to live

A city is much more than a place, at least that’s what Fabian Dembski, one of the managers of this project, thinks.

For Dembski, he suggests that cities function as a living organism that evolves over time. For this reason, city planning may or may not improve the health of the inhabitants.

It is true that technology has greatly helped large cities to make them efficient, equitable and inclusive.

To recreate this city, the researchers used supercomputing to develop models of urban environments by adapting digital twins in cities that would simulate planning processes.

The focus of this project is that the life of a city produces infinite interactions. To understand them, factors such as air quality, traffic conditions, and pedestrian prevalence must be taken into account.

The importance of emotions

A 2D schematic is produced, then geographic data and traffic data are included for a realistic recreation.

All this served to create an application that invited residents of the German city to send their emotional responses, that is, they sent their feelings to certain locations.

Once the answers are obtained, a 3D visualization of the city is made and the data provided is included, thus creating an immersive virtual reality model. According to the research team, the possibility of incorporating Artificial Intelligence applications to represent the emotions of its citizens is being considered.
