This is what is worth reaching the Moon in 2024 according to NASA

NASA stipulates that the cost of going to the Moon in 2024 will exceed all its budgets: it will need an additional $ 35 billion.

Needless to say, reaching the moon is very expensive. It was also in the 60s and 70s, when the Apollo missions occurred. But in this case there was not only one scientific interest behind. The Cold War marked the political agenda in all its aspects, also in the dedication to the space race. The cost of going to the Moon was huge, but it was assumed as a matter of international politics.

Today the circumstances are not comparable at all. Hence, NASA’s intention to return to the Moon has been delayed. At the moment the White House does bet to return to the satellite, but wants to do it with other interests. The scientist will always be there. But the political aspect of the mission will be changed to a commercial one. Yes, there will be a new mission, but with the objective of obtaining economic returns.

Now the question is who pays it. NASA’s budget is public and depends directly on the United States Congress. A chamber that has increased the capital allocated to the space agency in recent years. Even so, that’s not worth it. US Vice President Mike Pence affirmed the intention to arrive in 2024. However, from NASA they believe that for this to be possible they will need an additional $ 35 billion. This will be the cost of going to the Moon, of course, added to the budget that the space agency already has.

And it is that NASA has a wide spectrum of ongoing projects. He cannot paralyze them all for the sole mission of returning to the Moon. So while preparing a landing system for astronauts, the so-called Human Landing System, the agency will spend money on many other initiatives in parallel.

NASA’s growing interest in the Moon

The cost of going to the moon is huge. And it seems uncertain that a real commercial revenue can be obtained from this trip. At least with a view to making the investment profitable. However, there may be people willing to take on financial risk. Another big difference with the 60s is that there is now an interest of private companies in space. It is a commercial interest based on the possible exploitation of resources.

And there are also channels to invest in a future moon landing. Before NASA concentrated almost all of the work. Now there are companies that develop projects collaborating side by side with the space agency. The assumption of economic risk by private entities could be a way of lightening the cost of going to the Moon.

The truth is that NASA already has plans for our satellite. When the next arrival occurs the astronauts will spend two weeks there. And the agency’s intention is to build a space station in the lunar orbit. Of course, that the adventure begins in 2024 is not clear.
